I've got a disk of the Levon Helm Band at Merefest from a couple of years ago. It is really good, and does contain a righteous Tennessee Jed in the set. I'm a believer...
I don't really want to know too much about the Band's politics and struggles with one another. All too sad. Look up Danko singing "when you awake" solo acoustic on Youtube. You'll shed a tear or drop a jaw at how good it is...

Hmmmmm, can't wait to hear if Dire likes this version (if the subject of the post itself hasn't already made him run screaming for the hills)

Thanks for that. Levon IMO is a righteous dude. Quit the '66 Dylan tour cos he wanted to do his own music. Went workin on an oil rig in the Gulf instead. I saw the Band twice in '74. Terrific. Levon's version of "Take Me To The River" is the best I ever heard. His autobiography is a great read. I don't suppose ya can get more country than comin from a place called Turkey Scratch! Rock on Levon.

And instead,it "made children"(?)multiplied the post withe today's date! I wanted to say Turkey (not turcs) as it is that I criticed ,not the people who can be nice ,at times .So why that post not erased ?Can you do it for me for this one post ?

Look at a post of yours; immediately to the right of "reply" is "[edit]" but only if your are properly logged in as "you" ("skies")...if your are, you will be able to edit it...unless I do not understand you; tell me exactly which thread the post is in--it is "here" right?

A minor misspelling is nothing to fret over however...

Levon just keeps moving on...a stick in the eye to Robbie Robertson. Just saw him in a bit part in the movie "The Shooter" couldn't have been cast better.

There's been some good activity at the Dime with Levon in various incarnations of the Band and Olabelle, his daughters band. Also been some tapes sneaking out of the midnight rambles he's been doing in Woodstock.

You're right about his role in The Shooter. Perfect. "Still got the shovel."

Real Nice

I think Larry is one of if not the best 'unknown' guitarists around! He was the highlight of the show when I saw Phil & Friends.

Funny you mention this. I just saw Levon last night at Merriweather Post in Maryland. They played three GD standards in a row: Deep Elem, Attics and Tennessee Jed. The Attics was probably the highlight of their set.

Other acts were stronger though. I really liked the Felice Bros and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.

I heard Levon's "Tennessee Jed" a few weeks ago & it just knocked me out! Levon is such a special musician, always true to his roots, plus he knows how to do a cover song, as Tennessee Jed proves. Anybody who has not checked out his Midnight Ramble live recordings should!

Little Feat also do a nice cover of Tennessee Jed at their live shows. They would segue it in and out of Dixie Chicken, along with a brief Dark Star jam.

I never cared much for the Grateful Dead's Jed, but like Dylan songs, there is always a good band to cover a great song and make it their own. Here is one Grateful Dead Tennessee Jed I love to hear played in where else but Tennessee!

Checkin out the Nashville show right now. Coooool. Jed is truly one of my favourite songs, the definitive version for me being the DP 29. Every time I hear that I'm waitin for the guitar solo which makes me hallucinate every time. Yes, everytime. Shake it shake it Sugaree.
